If you've lived in Spartanburg a while, you probably know the new chief. Art Littlejohn was sworn in Friday, Oct. 30, with outgoing chief Alonzo Thompson giving the oath in a packed room at the downtown library. The city announced the promotion in August after a national search.

“Spartanburg knows Art Littlejohn and Art Littlejohn knows Spartanburg.”

City Manager Chris Story

Littlejohn grew up on the Northside, and he went from "Officer Friendly" to major and public information officer. Community policing is "what I'm about," he said, and he plans to strengthen partnerships with schools, businesses, faith communities, nonprofits and neighborhoods. The department isn't "broken," he said.

  • Last post: led the patrol services bureau, the department's largest
  • 2022: won the Strom Thurmond Award and the Livio A. Beccaccio Award
  • Succeeds: Alonzo Thompson, who is retiring

Pickens County Council holds a first reading on a six-month data center moratorium

If you've followed Spartanburg County's data center debate, the neighbors are weighing in too. Pickens County Council held a first reading Monday on a six-month that would prevent any new data center development in the county. A developer recently asked county officials whether Pickens would host one.

Anderson County adopted a similar six-month moratorium, Fox Carolina reports. GoUpstate says Spartanburg County leaders recently advanced a temporary pause while drafting land-use standards. One Pickens resident said terms should be set "up front and not negotiated after the construction’s already begun."

  • Ordinance: No. 694
  • Length: up to six months
  • Proposed by: C. Claiborne Linvill
  • Second reading: date not announced

I had lunch at McAlister's Deli today.

“My order came to $28. 94. My change from $40 was $11.10. What? Yes! The male cashier told us he didn't have any pennies so he rounded up and gave me, not .05, a nickel like happens at Walmart and Dollar Tree, among other stores! I try to pay with my debit card to keep the store from taking money they are not entitled…”
