Spartanburg County Council advances three data center agreements on second reading
The Daily Spartanburg team
If you've been tracking the county's data center plans, County Council gave second reading Tuesday to development agreements for three projects, including the Valara development on South Pine Street. The votes came at a special meeting after a public hearing where dozens of residents spoke on both sides.
The three agreements differ in investment, jobs and length
| Agreement | Investment | Job target | Term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valara, South Pine St. | $2.8 billion | 27 | 10 years |
| AIB CLT1, Tyger River | $1.2 billion | 28 | 12 years |
| 300 Jones Road | $1.5 billion | 25 | 5 years |

- Community benefits: $12.6 million from AIB, $9 million from Jones Road
- Noise: county says plans show an increase under 10 decibels
- Jobs: agreements call the figures targets, not requirements
- Next: third and final reading
Opponents pointed out that pages for property legal descriptions and site master plans were still blank. Planning staff said those sections will be filled in before the third and final reading. On Oct. 22, council had approved a preliminary NorthMark and Valara agreement 4-1, with Monier Abusaft the lone no vote.
Valara's data center is the largest of the three at 457 megawatts
