Spartanburg County Council advances three data center agreements on second reading

The three agreements differ in investment, jobs and length

If you've been tracking the county's data center plans, County Council gave second reading Tuesday to development agreements for three projects, including the development on South Pine Street. The votes came at a special meeting after a public hearing where dozens of residents spoke on both sides.

  • Community benefits: $12.6 million from AIB, $9 million from Jones Road
  • Noise: county says plans show an increase under 10 decibels
  • Jobs: agreements call the figures targets, not requirements
  • Next: third and final reading

Opponents pointed out that pages for property legal descriptions and site master plans were still blank. Planning staff said those sections will be filled in before the third and final reading. On Oct. 22, council had approved a preliminary NorthMark and Valara agreement 4-1, with Monier Abusaft the lone no vote.

Valara's data center is the largest of the three at 457 megawatts

Spartanburg District 2 voters pass both school bond referendums

Both of District 2's referendums passed by double-digit margins, according to unofficial tallies from Tuesday's election. Question 1 allows up to $156.6 million in bonds for a new K-8 school in the Boiling Springs community and added classrooms at Cooley Springs-Fingerville and Mayo elementaries. Question 2 allows up to $30 million for stadium upgrades at Boiling Springs and Chesnee high schools, middle school athletics and playground improvements.

District 2 says the Boiling Springs and Chesnee stadiums were built more than 50 years ago and have seen no major repairs. A coalition campaigning to "Vote Yes for D2" said the referendum aims to manage growth by building schools and classrooms.
